david johansen, mission of burma, etc.

WOW. it's been a while. i was busy after the last post; my friend got married (i was a bridesmaid) and then it was christmas and then i went to mexico with a special someone and then my car kind of shit itself and then uh...well, life happens. you know? but i have gone to some shows. like, two. ok that's pathetic, but don't worry because march is going to be THE MONTH for me. i have a good feeling.

so, i saw david johansen at the brighton bar in december sometime. i took my friend ryan with me because he's fun and he didn't get to go with me the last time. which, if you remember, kind of sucked. it was pretty much the same show but i had a good time because i had my show buddy with me. and it was fine. just not the greatest thing i've ever seen. and again, i'd rather just see the new york dolls in their current form doing the same songs that he's playing now. i mean, ideally, i'd be seeing the dolls in the seventies but that's neither here nor there. actually, it's there. like, way over there. but i digress.

then i saw mission of burma just recently. i can't really go into a whole lot of detail because they're one of those bands that i know next to nothing about but really like their music, what i've heard of it anyway. i mean, everyone knows that one song "that's when i reach for my revolver," right? well they didn't play that. so it was a really great show anyway. i saw my friends there that are always at the same punk shows as me. they're cool. we stood up front, like right in front of a monitor which was a terrible idea because i think i went a little deaf. mission of burma are a loud fucking band to begin with; standing in front of their shit is just stupid. but that's me for you. so yeah. i would definitely go see them again (maybe stand back a bit, though, or bring ear plugs or something) because overall they are a band that writes really strong songs. everything hit me in my gut in the good way, even though most of the songs i've probably only heard once or twice in my life. not to mention for the encore they did 2 beatles songs. TWO! "paperback writer" and "rain." holy shit, only like 2 of the best beatles songs ever, am i right? it was so cool. they're super tight as a band and can really play. obviously they've been doing this for a while, but you can tell they still love what they're doing and put everything into it. unlike david johansen who is probably only doing shows for the money at this point. after the show i bought a tshirt; roger miller himself was manning the merch table. i like to buy whatever i can from touring bands that i like because as broke as i am, i know they are struggling, too, and touring isn't easy, and even if it's only a $15 shirt that just gave them some gas money. anyway he was super cool and found me the shirt i wanted in the smallest size and i said "THAT'S PERFECT!" so i think he was pleased with himself.

so that's that. glen matlock and sylvain sylvain are doing another tour which starts in march and i'm over the freaking moon about it. i'm going to try to go to as many shows as possible. at least two. but hopefully three to four. because that shit has stuck with me for the past year and i'm always talking about how cool those two dudes were and how much fun the shows were. also? i owe glen matlock $10. how often do you get to say that? i've been saying it for the past year. (remember he gave me a free cd because i only had enough money to buy a book?) i'm looking forward to paying him back and not being in debt to a sex pistol. even though he probably doesn't remember. so yeah. and also robyn hitchcock is touring as well as jonathan richman and lots of other people. it's going to be a good month. just please, stop snowing, ok nature? you're not allowed to fuck up my plans.
